The TCPA has been commissioned by the London Borough of Merton in collaboration with the London Healthier Highstreets Group to develop and produce a best practice guide public health involvement and collaboration in the planning process for councils.
The policy context is set within London with a description of the London Plan and various London-based evidence base, and a policy review of Local Plans and Health and Wellbeing Strategies was conducted only for London Boroughs, but the findings will be of interest to others outside of London as they seek to strengthen their policy frameworks for promoting health and wellbeing. But the Guide is of relevance to councils across the whole of England and beyond.
This project builds on the extensive technical work developed as part of the TCPA’s Reuniting Health and Planning programme. It has involved the experienced contribution from Angie Jukes and Chimeme Egbutah from Stockport and Luton Councils respectively. The strength of the TCPA’s approach continues to be focused on collaboration and maximising local expertise and existing/ emerging best practice. The outcome is to improve the knowledge of council public health teams to a baseline understanding of engaging with planners and to be able to engage effectively throughout the planning process to meet local health priorities.

A Workshop with Merton Council Public Health and Planning Policy-Development Management Officers was also undertaken as part of the project in June.
